Bach (34) was built during 1919 and 1920 by William
Culpan who occupied the Bach until 1950 at which time was sold to Henrietta
Eccles mother of Doris North. Doris married Laurie North who owned the lease of
Bach (39) which was distorted by fire in 1975.
Bach (34) originally consisted of one large room a
small bed room and verandah. In the early 1960s Laurie and Doris North built in
the veranda to incorporate the main room and the small bedroom. The Bach was
originally lined with corrugated Iron and vertical boards, the east side still
has the ordinal vertical boards the veranda is lined with weatherboards.
The interior is lined with hard board and a very
distinctive fireplace surrounded by South Island stones. There is a
storage shed which came from the prisoners camp, during the 1920s it was used
to house prisoners while building roads, paths and the swimming pool.
The Trainer Family
Christmas 1948 Cliff and May Trainer and their two
children, Adele and Lyn, were kindly offered a Rangitoto Bach from the North
family, for a two week holiday. Upon arrival and standing at the end of the
wharf the Trainers wondered what on earth they had let themselves in for.
However, they needn't have worried as it was the beginning of a lifetime's
enjoyment of recurrent holidays on the Island that ensued for the next (64)
years. Lyn and his family continued to be part of the Islands community and are
currently working to preserve the Bach's, community and the environment.
